Nontoxic Home- Chemicals & The Body

Welcome to my Nontoxic Home Blog series! Hope you were able to check out my last blog where I listed out some of the common chemicals to be aware of. Today I want to show you WHY you want to avoid these.dangerouschemicals
Last week I listed just a few chemicals because there are 80, 000 to beware of and that’s super scary not to mention overwhelming. To make it simple a good rule of thumb to see if the wording “Fragrance” is anywhere. This is a dangerous word since companies can hide things like phthalates in fragrances. Phthalates can cause all kinds of issues in your body from infertility to birth defects. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed start there!
Most of the chemicals that companies put in products are major Endocrine disrupters such as BPA, Dioxin, lead, phthalates, and glycol ethers. Your endocrine system is made up of the pituitary glands, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries or testicles. These are the glands that produce and secrete hormones, chemical substances produced in the body that regulate the activity of cells or organs. These hormones regulate the body’s growth, metabolism (the physical and chemical processes of the body), and sexual development and function.
An Endocrine disruptor is from chemicals that can harm your endocrine hormones, they can either mimic or block estrogen or androgen hormones. Interference with these hormones can cause issues in your liver by altering their metabolism. Also these disruptors can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects and other developmental disorders.
You do not want to be messing with your endocrine system the affects can literally be deadly. Watch out for some of those chemicals previously listed to start with, and as you do your research it will become easier to avoid. Also a great helper is the Think Dirty App, this has been a great resource for me on my journey.think dirty
